GSF Career Spotlight: Melissa Richardson

Sometimes a company’s culture makes a lasting impression before a career even begins. For Melissa Richardson, that moment came in 2017 when she interviewed at GSF’s Protein Products facility in Opelika, Alabama, before construction crews had even finished the plant. One thing already stood proudly on the wall: GSF’s Creed and Values.
That first impression helped launch a career that continues to grow nearly a decade later. Melissa joined GSF as an Executive Assistant when the Opelika facility opened. Since then, she has taken on new responsibilities, supported leaders across the business and recently earned a promotion to Office Manager.
A move from Huntsville to the Auburn area prompted Melissa’s job search, but GSF’s people convinced her to stay.
“GSF has grown into a family for me,” Melissa said. “We face challenges together, support one another through tough moments and celebrate successes as a team. Those relationships have made all the difference throughout my career.”
Melissa credits protein operations leaders Wayne Morgan and Nathan Murphy for encouraging her growth and supporting the many roles she has held over the years. In Opelika’s early days, a small team handled a wide range of responsibilities, creating opportunities to learn new skills and rely on one another.
Her career journey also brought an unexpected surprise. After several years in her role, Melissa received a promotion to Senior Executive Assistant.
“I didn’t even know a senior position existed,” she recalled. “Getting called into the vice president’s office and hearing about the promotion felt like a wonderful surprise.”
Before joining GSF, Melissa built her career in accounting firms and country club environments. Manufacturing introduced an entirely new industry and broadened her professional experience. Through GSF, she also found connections within the Opelika community, where associates actively support local organizations and events. Today, Melissa enjoys the people most of all.
“This is a big, demanding and important business, but we still find ways to make work enjoyable,” she said. “I always tell new associates that there’s plenty of success for everyone. Be kind, support each other and work together.”
Melissa encourages associates who want to advance their careers to stay patient, work hard and let results speak for themselves.
“Don’t tell people you’re a hard worker,” she said. “Show them through your actions.”
From day one in Opelika to her latest promotion, Melissa has showed her dedication, teamwork and service in her actions. She looks forward to continuing to help the Opelika team successfully support its customers every day.
“We’ll keep plugging away and making burgers,” she said with a smile.
